My wife recently went to see a motivational speaker. The theme of the speech was the “six human needs”. According to this speaker, there are six basic needs that every person is seeking and therefore it is the job of salespeople, business professionals, and the businesses themselves to fulfill those needs. Some discussion and analysis about the six needs with our little customers at home proceeded my wife’s arrival that evening. After a few nights rest the six items continued to resonate with me, applying it to my own business partnerships, friendships, family, and hobbies. I am the type of person that analyzes everything in great depth. There are no off days in my brain. Just like my self-analysis of my personal relationships, I wondered, do my local network of short tracks meet the criteria as well?
The Need for Certainty The smells, sights, and sounds of a racetrack. The cold beer and fresh popcorn. The story a friend tells every time you bump into them. And the 2 hour wait to fall asleep after a night at the track as the adrenaline slowly goes away. The Need for Variety Dirt, asphalt, quarter, third, and half milers. Late models, modifieds, sprint cars and bandits. The experienced vs. the rookie. The champions vs the up and comers. You do not get more variety than at a short track. The Need for Significance Kids nights to veterans promotions, mothers and fathers days, scout nights and Harley parking. Honoring our country, local schools, and those fallen. In racing, we tend to do what is right. The Need for Connection On track autograph sessions and walking the pits, driver/race team social media pages interacting with fans, and appearances on the many local racing shows, there no other minor league sport as accessible as short track racers, keep it up! The Need for Growth Seeing hard working teams and drivers become successful, drivers helping drivers or fans helping fans. Seeing someone apologize publicly for taking someone out. There is no better example than race people. The Need for Contribution Short track racing gave me United Race Fans of Wisconsin, this blog, the website, the social media pages, and most importantly, the many new friends, faces, and interactions each season. I hope I can contribute a small percentage of what it has given me. That is six check marks for me. What about you? To find out more about the "six human needs" go to www.cannonballmoments.com.
